BBBS honors Don Schenkel with Don Wolf Award

Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) proudly honored Donald (Don) F. Schenkel with the 2018 Don Wolf Award on Tuesday, May 8, at its 45th Annual Gourmet Dinner. Named after Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Indiana co-founder and former CEO of Do it Best Corp the Don Wolf Award is one of the most prestigious honors given by the agency to a community member that goes above and beyond the call of excellence in community service.

Fort Wayne native Don Schenkel has been a pillar of the community for decades. Affectionately known to most as just “Don,” he is the essential community partner, creating a legacy that represents faith, compassion, honesty, integrity and true love for others.

Schenkel is affiliated and involved with many local boards and nonprofit organizations in the Fort Wayne area, and works diligently to give back to the community. He is the current chairman of the board at Wayne Pipe & Supply, retired founding chair and president of Tower Bank and Tower Financial Corporation, and he has over 50 years of outstanding work in banking, finance, and real estate development.

Schenkel’s commitment to community service and volunteerism has benefited many organizations. Lending his leadership, expertise and guidance, he has touched many lives and made a big impact in Fort Wayne and the surrounding areas. His love for people, children and building stronger community’s shows through his work with Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Boys and Girls Club of Northeast Indiana, the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission, Junior Achievement, Science Central, and The United Way of Allen County.

The Don Wolf Award was established in 1999 and is given to an individual or individuals in recognition of commitment and contribution to youth in our community. Don Wolf, long-time CEO of Do it Best Corporation (formerly HWI), is primarily responsible for bringing Big Brothers Big Sisters to Northeast Indiana in 1972. Since that time, Wolf has been a devoted supporter and benefactor of Big Brothers Big Sisters and is a past board president of both local and national boards.
