The Awakening Church to provide tennis shoes

Posted: Friday, June 15, 2012

The Awakening Community Church will host Steps for Success, which is an event providing tennis shoes for children going back to school. The activity will take place on Saturday, August 4 at Drover Park/Splash Pad on Etna Avenue.

Steps for Success began in 2010 in conjunction with back to school time. Each year students and their families have many required items to purchase to prepare for school including a new pair of tennis shoes for physical education class. The Awakening Community Church is helping students from kindergarten through high school prepare for school by providing new tennis shoes at the annual Steps for Success event.

The event has grown since its beginnings and last year over 450 children were served. The Awakening anticipates an even bigger need within the community this year with a goal of providing over 600 children with tennis shoes. For 2012 the church is also planning to offer a free meal that day, on-site haircuts for kids, hygiene items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes and more.

Businesses and individuals in the community are being invited to be a part of this event and help to prepare children for the upcoming school year. Monetary donations are welcomed and four levels of sponsorship are available: platinum, $1,000 plus; gold, $500; silver, $250 and bronze, $100. Donations of other items are also being sought such as tennis shoes; a business providing food for the day; snacks such as ice cream, sno-cones and more; water for the day; hygiene items; vouchers for teeth cleanings; sponsorships for inflatables for kids to play in and more.

Volunteers from the community are also welcome and needed to make this event successful. Individuals will be helping to size children for shoes, serving food and water and more. Sponsoring businesses will be acknowledged at the event and named in all press releases in the local media promoting Steps for Success. For more information, to donate or for an application to become part of this outreach, contact Ashlyn at (260) 358-4125 or e-mail: Those willing to donate are asked to contact The Awakening by Wednesday, July 18. Donated shoes may be dropped off in totes located at the Huntington County Chamber of Commerce, Coffee d'Vine, RE/MAX Professional Group and Community Link Federal Credit Union.
