Andy Zay recognized by Junior Achievement

Posted: Friday, March 7, 2014

Junior Achievement of Huntington County (JA) recognized former board member, Andy Zay, at their February meeting. For his long-time support of JA, he was presented with a gift of Titleist/Cubs that had been embroidered on the side with the Junior Achievement logo.

Zay started with JA nearly 15 years ago when he volunteered to teach second graders the “Our Community” program at Andrews Elementary. He continued to volunteer at Andrews for about four years and then moved to teaching the same program at Huntington Catholic where he continues to volunteer today. He also spent three years volunteering in the classroom at Huntington North High School teaching JA’s “Success Skills” program.

In 2003 Zay joined Junior Achievement of Huntington County’s board. He served as president for three years, making necessary changes as to how the board raised funds. He moved to eliminate the volume of fundraisers that JA once did and pushed to instead focus on two or three good fundraisers. Out of this effort, the letter campaign was better organized and was the target fundraiser for Huntington County.

From his involvement with Junior Achievement, Zay was asked to work with the Financial Stability Coalition, Life-Long Learning, the United Way Financial Literacy Initiative, summer programming at the YMCA and the Boys & Girls Club. Now his involvement with JA is with Junior Achievement of Northern Indiana (JANI) Regional Board.

Zay says, “Being a business owner and a community advocate, I think the mission of Junior Achievement aligns perfectly with whom I am and what I stand for. I believe the future of the communities that we live and work in will succeed only if the next generation understands the importance of basic economics and fiscal stewardship. I enjoy my time in the classroom with the kids and the growth opportunities of Junior Achievement in Northeast Indiana by helping to reach over 100,000 kids with programs of Junior Achievement.”
