56th Heritage Days Parade entries sought

Posted: Friday, March 15, 2019

The 56th Annual Heritage Days Parade will take place Saturday, June 22 at 10 a.m. The parade will line up at Huntington North High School and on MacGahan Street. It then will follow onto North Jefferson Street to East Park Drive, turn west on Park Drive, then south on Warren Street. The parade follows Warren Street around the Courthouse, then south onto South Jefferson Street, ending at Etna Avenue. Deadline to enter is Saturday, June 8.

The Heritage Days theme for 2019 is The ’60s: “Yesterday.” The official sponsor is Gerdau Huntington Facility, 25 Commercial Road. The official colors are lime green, orange and yellow. The theme can be carried out on parade entries with ideas pertaining to the ’60s. Growth was experienced in the area that helped Huntington become the community we know today. The $8 million U.S.-24 bypass, school reorganization, the opening of Huntington North High School, Jefferson Park Mall, plans for Riverfork Industrial Park, the reservoir system expansion, Norwood Golf Course, the Heritage Days celebration and more all began in the ’60s.

Nationally, man walked on the moon, the idea of “make love, not war” took hold of the nation and music included rock and roll favorites by the Beatles such as “Yesterday” and “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” the Rolling Stones with “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction, the Monkees and “I’m A Believer,” the Ronettes with “Be My Baby” and many more. Cruising continued to be a favorite pastime and local sports tournaments dominated the high school scene.

New categories will be used for judging and will include the best Adult Group (over 18 years old), Antique Vehicle (over 25 years old), Best Religious Unit, Best Theme Float (must follow Heritage Days theme to win), Classic Vehicle (25 years old or newer) and Youth Group (18 years and under).

The official button shows the former Jefferson Park Mall, which encompassed downtown Huntington. It was a result of volunteer efforts in the spring and summer of 1969. The button will be available for purchase at the Chamber office closer to the Heritage Days celebration.

Entry forms are available at the Chamber office, 305 Warren Street, or can be downloaded here. A $25 entry fee and certificate of liability insurance must be included with the entry form. For more information call the Chamber at (260) 356-5300.
