Posted: Friday, August 31, 2018

A pair of foursomes took top team honors in the 28th annual Parkview Huntington Golf Classic, held August 10 at Norwood Golf Course in Huntington. Team Kennedy and a team from Huntington University both had scores of 54 to share the win.

Proceeds from the event will purchase a new hearing screening device for Parkview Huntington Hospital’s Family Birthing Center. The equipment employs the latest auditory advancements to determine an infant’s ability to hear, all is part of the comprehensive physical assessment for all newborns.

Parkview Huntington Foundation organized the event, which attracted 32 foursomes. More than 20 hospital employees and community members volunteered to assist throughout the day.

“This year was the first time we played golf in the morning, and the weather cooperated,” said Foundation Director Mike Perkins. “As usual, team play in the men’s and ladies’/mixed divisions was very competitive.”

The Moake Park Group architectural firm again was the presenting sponsor of this year’s golf classic.

“The generosity of the golfers, sponsors and all our auction contributors helped the foundation meet its goal of funding the unit for the Family Birthing Center,” he added.

Huntington businesswoman Darlene Stanley was honored with the 2018 Parkview Huntington Foundation PARtner award in a ceremony prior to the start of play. At the presentation, Perkins noted her significant contributions to the event’s success over the past 14 years as a volunteer, sponsor and auction gift contributor.

“It is people like Darlene Stanley who make time in their busy schedules to be part of this event each year,” Perkins said, “and their efforts are instrumental in its success. Darlene has always been ready to meet any need we have had. That attitude reflects the service spirit of the Stanley family and everyone at JJ’s, the Stanley family’s business.”

Both of the winning foursomes recorded scores of 54 in Florida scramble play on the par-71 Norwood layout. The winning men’s division team was captained by Jason Kennedy and included Lee Cutting, Dr. Matt Eckert and Garin Stephan. Top honors in the ladies’/mixed division went to the Huntington University team of Beth and Terry Herrell, Lance Hoch and Mickey Belt.

Floyd Garrott was the winner of the gentlemen’s drive accuracy contest on the second hole. The ladies’ winner in that competition was Ann Kasper. Other course skills contest prizes went to Roger Kilty, for the longest putt on the 18th hole, and to Cutting, whose drive was closest to the pin on the par-three No. 3.
